Created for the exhibition VOLTAGE OF HOPE, this monumental painting presents Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Empress of the Americas, as both a sacred figure and a living cultural presence. Painted with Los Angeles in mind — a city shaped by Indigenous histories, Mexican and Mexican American culture, migration, displacement, resistance, and continual reinvention — the work returns to the tension between the ordinary and the sacred, doubt and belief. Hope, here, is a voltage: a current moving through the body, land, memory, and generations.
